I love museums.
In 2019, I got to spend a few days in Seattle, Washington. While wandering alone for a few hours before my flight back home, I happened upon the Klondike Gold Rush museum.
I was struck by two things:
The Klondike is, like, REALLY far north and pretty tough to get to (especially in 1896). Just over the border between Alaska and Canada, Yukon Territory is over 600 kilometers north of British Columbia.
Chances of striking, mining, or even obtaining actual gold were slim. Most prospectors left poorer than they came. But by and large, people were happy with their choice to stampede to the Yukon, and thankful to have the opportunity.
This Wikipedia article quotes historian Pierre Berton, describing the Klondike as "just far enough away to be romantic and just close enough to be accessible".
There is something in us that longs for adventure.
Whether it’s the thrill of smashing a row of gems in Bejewelled or scaling a rock wall with your bare hands, we are built to crave a good challenge.
We need to find out what we’re capable of.
